Did You Know Alexander Graham Bell Studied Sheep Alongside His Inventions?

Alexander Graham Bell is remembered for the telephone, but archival records reveal another long-running interest: sheep breeding at Beinn Bhreagh, his Nova Scotia estate. Bell sought to increase twin and triplet births, kept detailed tables of ancestry and physical traits, and even copied a 1909 newspaper advertisement offering to buy sheep with six, seven or eight nipples. An 1898 letter to his wife, Mabel, shows him tracing the ancestry and wool of a promising black lamb. The evidence does not turn his hypothesis into a modern scientific conclusion, and Bell’s broader heredity thinking included discredited eugenic ideas. His lesser-known project offers a useful prompt for family history: preserve the interests, records, unfinished experiments and troubling convictions that reveal a whole person—not only the achievement for which someone became known.

Say “Alexander Graham Bell” and most people picture a telephone. Perhaps a wire, a receiver and a famous summons to Mr. Watson appear next. Sheep are considerably less likely to enter the scene.

Yet at Beinn Bhreagh, the estate overlooking Bras d’Or Lake near Baddeck, Nova Scotia, Bell devoted serious attention to sheep breeding. This was not a weekend curiosity that vanished after one stroll through a pasture. His surviving papers include letters, journals, tables and photographs connected with the work. The Library of Congress summarizes his aim plainly: he sought to increase the number of twin and triplet births.

The unexpected part is not simply that a celebrated inventor owned sheep. It is the methodical way he watched them, traced their ancestry and recorded what he saw. Bell’s sheep records offer a useful reminder for anyone preserving a life story: the questions a person returns to can reveal as much as the achievement printed beside their name.

A home that was also a laboratory

Bell first visited Baddeck in 1885. He and his wife, Mabel Hubbard Bell, began building Beinn Bhreagh Hall in 1892. Parks Canada describes the estate as both their home and a centre of experimentation, where Bell investigated subjects including sound transmission, medicine, aeronautics, marine engineering, tetrahedral structures—and sheep breeding.

Modern biographies can make a life look as though it followed one clean line toward an inevitable accomplishment. Bell’s did not. The telephone’s financial success gave him freedom to pursue many questions.

His sheep project had a practical goal. Multiple births could mean more lambs from a flock. Bell investigated whether physical traits he could observe and selectively breed—especially additional nipples—might be connected with a ewe’s capacity to bear and nourish twins or triplets. It is important to state that carefully. The authoritative Library of Congress account says the experiments sought more twin and triplet births; Bell’s own records show what he measured. Those records do not justify turning his hypothesis into a modern scientific conclusion.

The telephone inventor’s sheep tables

A 1909 Beinn Bhreagh recorder preserved by the Library of Congress shows the level of detail. Bell explained tables that identified sheep by ancestral number and name, then recorded colour, sex, number of nipples, and whether the animal had been born as a single, twin or triplet. The tables also included the year of birth.

This is where the story becomes more interesting than the easy headline “inventor kept sheep.” Bell was building a record across generations. A single unusual animal might attract attention, but a pedigree and repeated observations could help him ask whether a trait continued through a family line.

He was also willing to look beyond his existing flock. In July 1909, his journal copied an advertisement planned for newspapers in Baddeck and Sydney. It invited owners to examine lambs for six or more nipples and offered different prices: $10 for a six-nippled sheep, $15 for seven and $20 for eight, delivered to the Beinn Bhreagh nursery.

The advertisement is surprising, specific and verifiable. It also reveals the practical machinery behind an experiment.

A black lamb in a letter to Mabel

Bell’s records did more than preserve columns of figures. In a letter-journal entry to Mabel dated May 13, 1898, he described walking up the mountain and carefully examining the lambs. One black lamb caught his attention because its wool seemed glossy, fine and long-fibred. He traced the animal’s ancestry to a four-nippled Merino great-grandfather identified in his system as M405.

Bell then considered whether the line might improve the flock’s wool while retaining the traits he was following. He imagined black wool becoming a distinguishing feature of the Beinn Bhreagh flock.

The value of the entry lies partly in its incompleteness. It captures an observation and a possibility, not a triumphant result. Bell noticed a lamb, checked its ancestry, formed a question and wrote it down. On the same pages, he moved to concern for a neighbour’s family, an idea for the local Ladies’ Club and news of war. Scientific curiosity, community life and world events occupied the same letter because they occupied the same day.

That mixture is precisely what a polished résumé removes. It is also what makes a personal record feel like a life.

Why the notebooks matter

The Alexander Graham Bell Family Papers at the Library of Congress contain material from Bell and several members of his family. The collection overview says more than 200 volumes of Bell’s laboratory notebooks were compiled from 1879 to 1922. A separate Library catalogue record identifies an extensive set of photograph albums, including an album devoted to sheep experiments.

Those materials allow us to distinguish evidence from an entertaining retelling. We can verify that sheep breeding formed part of Bell’s work at Beinn Bhreagh. We can read his explanation of the categories in his tables. We can see the wording and prices of the 1909 advertisement. We can read his 1898 observation of the black lamb in context.

The record also prevents us from romanticizing every idea. A Library of Congress curator notes that Bell’s animal-breeding work was connected with a now-discredited eugenic belief that breeding principles could be applied to human beings. That belief was harmful, not a charming extension of curiosity. A complete life story has room for achievement, persistent inquiry and troubling convictions without confusing one for another.

What we should not do is improve the story by inventing a eureka moment, declaring that every idea succeeded or placing clever remarks in Bell’s mouth. The surviving documents are already vivid. Their appeal comes from the patient oddness of the work: names, numbers, pedigrees, wool, newspaper notices and years of attention beside a Nova Scotia mountain.

The lesser-known thread in a life

Bell’s sheep work is a “Did you know?” fact, but it also suggests a better question for family history: What did this person keep wondering about?

A relative may be remembered for one role—teacher, electrician, parent, nurse, shopkeeper—while the rest of the person fades behind it. Perhaps she spent years identifying garden birds. Perhaps he repaired clocks at the kitchen table, compared bread recipes, kept weather totals or drew every house he lived in. These interests need not produce a patent, a prize or even a finished project to belong in the story.

If you are recording someone’s life, try asking:

  • What subject could hold your attention for hours?
  • Did you keep notebooks, lists, measurements or collections?
  • What problem did you return to even when nobody paid you for it?
  • Who helped with the work, and where did it happen?
  • Which idea never quite worked but still taught you something?

Then look for evidence that can sit beside memory: a dated notebook, a labelled object, a letter, a receipt, a photograph or a family member’s account. Keep uncertainty visible. “She may have begun in the early 1970s” is more trustworthy than a precise year nobody can support.

You also do not need to force every interest into one grand explanation. Bell’s sheep experiments belong in the same life as the telephone, kites and hydrofoils, but they do not have to become a parable about all invention. Sometimes a recurring curiosity is meaningful because it shows how a person spent attention.

Record the side project, not only the headline
