This morning started long before sunrise. Our flight from Toronto landed in Punta Cana just after lunch, and the moment we stepped outside the airport, the warm tropical air wrapped around us like a blanket. Jake immediately pulled off his hoodie. "Grandma... this feels like walking into summer!" Emily laughed. "I don't think you'll need that sweatshirt again this week." The drive to the resort didn't take very long. Palm trees lined the road, colorful flowers were everywhere, and every few minutes we caught another glimpse of the Caribbean Sea through the trees. When we finally opened the door to our room, we didn't even unpack. Instead, we changed into shorts, grabbed our sandals and headed straight to the beach. The sand was softer than I imagined. The water was crystal clear and surprisingly warm. Jake immediately rolled up his shorts and chased tiny fish near the shoreline. Of course he didn't catch a single one. "They're cheating," he announced. Emily shook her head. "No, Jake... they're just faster than you." I couldn't stop laughing. A few minutes later Emily spotted a beautiful pink seashell almost hidden under the water. Jake insisted it should become "the official lucky shell of the vacation." Emily wasn't convinced. "I bet tomorrow I'll find an even better one." Looks like we already have our first vacation competition. Tonight we had dinner outside while the sun slowly disappeared into the Caribbean Sea. For the first time in months, I realized I hadn't looked at my phone for hours. Maybe that's the real beginning of a vacation. We didn't even unpack.
